Summary:
Arsenios, following the advice of Elder Kyrillos, returns from Mount Athos to the family’s home in Konitsa to help them with work in the fields and prepare his little sister’s dowry. For three years he works tirelessly and, having fulfilled his obligations to his family, he leaves for Mount Athos, permanently.
In August 1953, he arrived at the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou and, under the guidance of Abbot Kallinikos, as a young novice monk, he followed the spiritual life, distinguished for his zeal, sacrificial love and humility. At the Monastery of Esphigmenou, the monastic tonsure is performed and he takes the name Averkios. Later, he arrives at the Monastery of Philotheou, where a relative of his, Elder Symeon, is a monk. There, he will get the “Little Schema” and he is given the name Paisios.
He says goodbye to his mother, sending her a photograph and a poem, in which he describes his great desire for the spiritual life and tells her that his mother from now on is the Virgin Mary, and Evlogia gives him her blessing.
